The Individual in Society: For this module, the subtopic I chose to reflect on is self-esteem. I chose this sub-topic as I consider self-esteem as one of the most important personal strengths. I strongly believe that the most successful people have high self-esteem. I work on my self-esteem on a continuing basis and I felt that reflecting on this subtopic would give me an opportunity to acquire more knowledge on self-esteem improvement. According to the lecture on this subtopic, self-esteem refers to an individual’s “overall self-evaluation or sense of self-worth.” To put it simply, self-esteem is how a person views themselves. We learned various concepts relating to self-esteem, notably self-serving bias, self-presentation, and narcissism.
Self-serving bias is the inclination to judge oneself more favourably in an attempt to maintain one’s self-esteem (Griffin, 2016). For example, individuals and organisations have a tendency of attributing their success to themselves and their failure to others or external factors. Self-presentation, also referred to as impression management, denotes how an individual expresses or portrays themselves (Griffin, 2016). When it comes to self-presentation, individuals may portray themselves truthfully or dishonestly.
