Risk Factors for Addiction
Biological, social, psychologic, and cultural factors can contribute to addiction. Biologically, genetics surrounding alcohol addiction are intricate and yet to be understood entirely. However, it is thought that a total of 51 genes influence, for instance, the kind of feeling someone experiences when they take alcohol and their likelihood of stopping the behavior (Juergens, 2019). Children born from parents addicted parents are also highly likely to be addicted to drugs.
One major social factor is the glorification of drug use among peers. Those who do not use at least one substance are considered outcasts, thus, prolonged use may result in addiction. Psychological factors mostly deal with dependence on drugs.
For instance, some people use drugs like alcohol to manage their prevailing situations. If such situations are recurrent, they will always turn to the drugs and, with time, become addicted. In certain cultures, certain drugs, for instance alcohol, are used for various celebrations. In such cases, alcohol and other drugs are encouraged, which could make regular users addicted.
However, some of these factors can also offer protection from addiction. Since the genetic factors influence the feeling people get when they take drugs, suppose the feeling is negative and undesirable, a person may develop hatred for the particular substance, avoid continuous use, and prevent. Social factors like peer pressure may also protect someone if their associate with a peer-group that does not engage in use of addictive substances.
These groups can also offer valuable teachings and information to help members manage addiction. Concerning psychological factors, instead of alcohol dependence, such people can look to non-addictive alternatives like counselling or other medically approved means of managing their life situations.
Finally, Juergens (2019) states that some cultures consider drug use and alcoholism shameful. On one hand, this could discourage the use of alcohol and other addictive substances.
