The research paper should reflect mastery of both the research topics and their relevance in the field of psychology. This is not an opinion paper. You need to use research to describe the issue.
Format: Papers must be a minimum of 1,000 words. Psychological research papers should follow the general format of the American Psychological Association: paragraph format, typed in size 12 font, with Times New Roman or Arial type font, and doubled spaced with 1” margins. All papers must be properly cited and must include a reference page [issues in Psychology]
Research papers, of course, require clarity, proper grammar and spelling. If the paper is unclear and/or indicates that you put in little or no effort, your paper will not be accepted. Please proofread your papers and/or contact the writing center for assistance.
Sources: Using the library’s resources (LINNC web, EBSCO, etc.), search for peer-reviewed psychology articles (your choice of topic). You will need your MDC Card. You must locate, print, and reference at least five peer-reviewed, full-text periodicals (articles). Your paper must also include 2-3 websites that address the issue as well (websites, not blogs or wikis, are to be used).[issues in Psychology]
Possible topics:
- Understanding of the differences between disorders outlined in the DSM V and disorders outlined by pharmaceutical companies
- What is to be done about the rising concerns of mental health in mass killings? What can be done preventatively if the person has never sought help, without impeding on their rights?
- Psychologists continue to debate controversial issues in their field, many of which can be seen in the recent changes to the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
- One of the ongoing debates in psychology concerns how to define the concepts of “normal” and “healthy”; what is healthy for one person may not be healthy for another, and perceptions of normality are largely influenced by societal norms.
- Current debates stemming from the changes to the DSM-5 include controversies around the diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder, gender dysphoria, depressive disorders, and borderline personality disorder (depathologizing).
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), while shown to improve symptoms of severe mental illnesses, continues to be a controversial form of treatment due to its side effects.
