WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

CONTENT

  • An annotated bibliography provides information about the variety of research available for a particular topic. It will usually contain a list of sources (in APA style) with short summaries of each source below.
  • The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help you as the writer, gain an understanding of the literature available for a particular topic.

Content

  • Annotated bibliographies generally contain the full referencing details, followed by a summary paragraph of what the reference was about.
  • Check the marking criteria for other information you may need to include.
  • NOTE: The cited reference is not included in the final word count. Only your work is counted in the word count.

Structure

Annotated bibliographies begin with the full reference for the source, followed by a paragraph (or more depending on your instructions) that describes and/or evaluates the source.

You are asked to write about a variety of things about the source. Some examples might be:

  • Summary of the resource and what it was about (content or scope of the text)
    • Outline the main argument and the intended audience
    • Identifying research methods/key theories/concepts/arguments
    • Evaluating the quality of the source.
    • Identify any conclusions made by the author/s
    • The bibliography should be structured in alphabetical order.

STYLE

Annotated bibliographies are written in a formal academic style, and are usually in 3rd person. However, your synthesis or summary paragraph can be written in the 1st person.

Annotated bibliographies also:

  • use full sentences (avoid dot points)
  • use transition words between ideas
  • don’t repeat the title in your summary, as it is already given in the citation

Follow our guide to writing academically

  • Double line spacing
  • Correct font and pagination (see guideline)
  • Adhere to word count (2,500 words)

WHAT TYPE OF LITERATURE DO I INCLUDE?

  • “Access evidence-based scholarly literature” = the library data base
  • Not grey literature / websites / Wikipedia / social media
  • Include mainly academic journal articles
  • Some book chapters can also be included
  • However, not entire books, as you would need to have read the publication in its entirety to write an annotation
  • You can also not use published book reviews

WORD COUNT

10 annotations (approx. 230w each) PLUS

Final paragraph/synthesis

(approx. 200w) Total word count = approx. 2500 words* (+/– 10% )

*Please note: citation of each source (each heading) is NOT part of the word count)

TOPIC

Core Competencies of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy practices in relation to one chosen Contemporary paradigm.

Example topic – (Choose one)

  • Object Relations paradigm
  • Self Psychology paradigm
  • PIT/ Conversation Model paradigm

Focus on psychological / counselling approaches of the contemporary era (i.e. this assignment is not about Freud as he is classically psychodynamic rather than contemporary psychodynamic)

WHAT IS THE MARKING RUBRIC?

Many students take one look at this and find it unfathomable, however it is quite simple and important to understand because this is how your paper is marked.

  • The important column on the rubric is the first one that tells you what is being marked, ie “the Criterion”.
  • You will see 5 areas or headings of criterion in this first column that can be marked from 1 to 10.
  • The 5 areas encompass: Content, Application, Evidence, Synthesis and Academic Literacies.
  • 5 areas of criterion at 10 possible marks each gives a total of 50 marks which is a the top of High Distinction.
  • The same 5 areas achieving 6 out of 10 will give a total of 30 out of 50 which is a Pass.
  • If a student ignores one area (like synthesis) or does not adhere to APA7 and uses inadequate grammar and spelling (as in Academic Literacies) then a mark of 1 to 4 will bring a fail in that area.
  • Check that your finished assignment ticks all criterion boxes.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

We all have a responsibility to uphold the ethics and morals of academia.

Plagiarising, cheating, and misrepresentation threaten the integrity of our learning and academic discipline.

Check your final assignment through Turnitin for a copied text ratio. Ideally it should be no more than 20%. A lot less is desirable. A high ratio will mean your paper will be submitted to the academic integrity board.

How to use Turnitin: https://sls.navitas-professional.edu.au/using-turnitin

Referencing correctly is key!
