Timeline of Deterioration
Mrs J was 86year old. She lived alone and had an active and independent life. She had a background of hypertension and osteoarthritis. She had had an appendicectomy when she was 35 years old. She was otherwise well.
24/12/2014- first admission
19:00: Mrs J presented to the Hospital ED with sudden onset abdominal pain and dysuria. She had no change in bowel habit and normal bowel sounds
She was seen by a GP Registrar, examined thoroughly and was diagnosed with a possible urinary tract infection or kidney stones. Vital signs were within range with a normal pulse and no tachycardia or fever. She was treated with analgesia, intravenous fluid and one dose of intravenous antibiotic. She was ordered an abdominal xray but this did not happen. After several hours, she reported feeling better, was stable and was discharged into the care of her family and told to return if she became more unwell.
