DSM-5’s conceptualisation of MDD is premised on the biomedical model of mental illness. This conceptualisation predominantly forms the basis of the diagnostic and treatment decisions made by psychiatrists when dealing with MDD patients. Many mental health policies are also informed by the biomedical model of mental illness (Watson, 2012).
