Understanding the Mental Health Impact
Two key variables were measured in this study: exposure to military violence and PTSD symptoms (Quota et al., 2003). Exposure to military violence was conceptualized as being a victim of destruction of the family house through shelling or bombardment during the Al-Aqsa Intifada. This variable was measured using an instrument developed specifically for the study. Developed by the research department of a local community mental health initiative, the instrument was dubbed the checklist of experiences of military violence. The instrument comprised 12 items that captured traumatic events that occurred during the autumn of 2001.
