Overview
- In the Advanced Information Management and the Application of Technology course, you will examine the interface of technology and nursing experienced by a Masters prepared nurse, and examine the complementary roles of the Masters level-prepared nursing information technology professionals, including informaticists and quality officers. You will analyze current and emerging technologies and information systems that support safe, quality, evidence-based patient care, examine ethical, legal and regulatory Informatics issues related to current healthcare environments, also explore the various roles nursing informatics plays in healthcare.
Situation
- What is Nursing Informatics? NI Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice (1994, 2001, 2008), with the most recent edition defining nursing informatics as “a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge
Background
- Consider your experience with a health information system (HIS) while doing your reading and writing your paper to help you understand and consider:
- Must Have: 21 Steps to Success Document-This document has key resources and Links for the course:
- Citations with References for the books and the unit reading IN STEP 12
- COHORTS The cohorts are key in being able to apply the concepts watch both recorded cohorts and attend Live Q&A
Reading– There is also a “search this course” search bar that will help you find words within all the reading units.
Writing your paper- Write in 3rd person when you answer the task questions about a Health Information System (HIS).
When writing about HIS functions and features, the tasks are not asking you to call out a brand name of different EHR vendors (for Example, Epic, Cerner, and so on) [Advanced Information Management]
. Provide descriptions or definitions of the concepts and then provide a scenario that paints a picture. (lack of details may cause the work to be sent back for revisions).
The Writing Center is a great resource for formatting your references in APA.
Go to “The Writing Center” then “View our Learning Resources” then “Using Sources and APA”. You can also make an appointment with them to go over any professional communication or APA formatting.
Assessment(s)
TIPS FOR TASK 1:
A1. Advantages and Disadvantages of a System
In your discussion, identify and discuss advantages and disadvantages to each of the given points below. Define each term. Use the word and advantage when describing an example of an advantage and then use the word disadvantage when describing an example of a disadvantage in the context of a HIS functionality.
Usability, Interoperability, Scalability, Compatibility
A2. Patient Care and Documentation (Think Input into the HIS) [Advanced Information Management]
- Provide several detailed examples of how a HIS will affect patient care and documentation.
- What are some of the features of the documentation that make patient care better and why?
A3. Quality and Delivery of Nursing Care and Patient Outcomes (Think Output from the HIS) [Advanced Information Management]
Provide detailed examples of how the HIS helps with the following 3 points. What are some of the features that make the documentation better and quality patient care and why?
- The quality of nursing care
- The delivery of nursing care
- Patient outcomes
B1. Ways QI Data Can Lead to Measurable Improvement
Discuss two QI measures where data is collected from a HIS can:
- Help improve health care services in general and
- The health care of specific patient populations
QI data includes quality indicators, the metrics your organization or unit measures and other measures that define facility compliance with QI/Safety/OSHA/JC. Think about what QI data your organization/unit monitors and how a HIS collects this information and is often used in reports. (examples: Falls, CAUTI, CLASBI, Readmissions)
B2. HITECH and HIPAA Security Standards and Regulations
Include a discussion on how HIPAA and HITECH can be achieved through an HIS by ensuring the following are integrated into the HIS:
- storage integrity of data
- data backup and recovery
- What are some of the features that get integrated?
B3. Protection of Patient Privacy
- What are some essential features found in a HIS designed to safeguard patient privacy?
- Think of any steps you take while using the system or any extra layers of protection the system provides in terms of protecting PHI.
B4. Organizational Efficiency and Productivity
In your discussion, how does a HIS help an organization to achieve and impact the following? Be sure to include each of the following points in your discussion:
- standardizing documentation
- reducing waste
- increasing productivity
- human and capital resource
What happens during an implementation to your human resources and capital costs?
What happens after the implementation?
Human resource examples: manpower, talent, knowledge and expertise. Will the workforce be affected? If so, how? What happens to the training costs of new employees? Will the workflow processes change because of standardized documentation and improved accuracy? If so, how does that affect the operating budget?
C. Interdisciplinary Team Identification
As the nurse informatics specialist, create your “Dream Team” for the committee you want to work with you in deciding upon a HIS, rolling it out, and evaluating it. This 4-member team is of your own creation, an interdisciplinary mix of individuals. Who would you pick to participate in this project with you?
INCLUDE
- Team member’s title in the organization
- Team member’s role in the implementation of a HIS (use the word role in your writing)
- Team member’s expertise and how it contributes to the success of the project (use the word expertise in your writing)
- Important Note: make a distinction between the role of a team member and their expertise. The role is what each team member will be responsible for on this project. The expertise is why you chose each of the team members, what makes them an asset to this project and can contribute to its success?
D. Plan for Evaluating Success of Implementing a System
Identify two professional organization standards that are relevant to implementing a HIS and build an evaluation plan that your committee from section C will use to state the HIS implementation is a success.
- Review HIS: Evaluating Success (2018)
- You can have 2 standards from the same organization, or 1 standard from 2 different organizations.
- In your paper, select the 1st standard you want to discuss.
- State the professional organization that supports this standard, describe the standard in your own words, cite it, and create a reference.
- EVALUATION STEPS: Describe how your committee will evaluate that this standard is being met by the HIS. (who is going to do what, what are they going to do, when are they going to do it, where are they going to do it, and how are they going to do it). What would the data look like?
- Then say how your implementation was successful.
- Repeat that same process for discussing your 2nd standard.

Task 1 Tips
Please consider your experience with health information systems (HIS) and what you have learned from reading the course materials. As you approach these course tasks, remember to write each section of the paper in third person.
- Consider the scenario as background information. Read and respond to each task section separately. One task section does not depend on the other task sections.
- Format using the rubric aspects as your Level 1 headings.
- This assessment does not require you to research, name, or ‘choose’ a health information system. You can base your responses off of your work experiences.
- Instead of naming a specific system call it “the HIS” throughout the paper.
- This is a professional paper, written in 3rd person. Check out step 12 of the 21 steps for a link to APA resources specific for this course
A1. Advantages and Disadvantages of the Selected System
Provide at least one advantage and one disadvantagefor each of the 4 concepts noted on the task directions. Define each concept, then discuss advantages and disadvantages for each.
A2. Patient Care and Documentation
Input of documentation: How does the HIS help the nurse document? How does this impact patient care? Provide specific examples
A3. Quality and Delivery of Nursing Care and Patient Outcomes
Output of documentation: How does accessing and reviewing information allow the nurse to provide quality (great) care to the patient and how does this impact patient outcomes? Provide specific examples
B1. Ways QI Data Can Lead to Measurable Improvement
Identify two specific examples of QI data – something that your organization or unit tracks. For each one, discuss how that data is documented, tracked and used to improve patient outcomes for a specific patient population.
B2. HITECH and HIPAA Security Standards and Regulations
Start off by providing an overview of the HITECH and HIPAA regulations and how they are related to one another. Then, you will discuss/define data integrity. Provide examples of the various safeguards that are used to protect data integrity in a HIS and why they’re necessary. Next, discuss/define data backup and recovery plans, what its purpose is, why it’s necessary. Lastly, sum it all up in a connecting statement on how protecting data storage integrity and having data backup and recovery fulfill the HITECH and HIPAA regulations. Review the Standards Recorded Cohort.
B3. Protection of Patient Privacy
How does a HIS safeguard access to Patient Health Information?
B4. Organizational Efficiency and Productivity
What are the benefits and cost implications to the organization during the HIS implementation for:
- Standardizing documentation
- Reducing waste
- Increasing productivity
- Human resources (staff)
- Capital resources (expenses)
C. Interdisciplinary Team Identification
Identify 4 individuals by their job title to help implement the HIS. For each person, discuss their “roles” (job duties), “expertise” (what qualifies the individual?) and why they are important to the success of the project.
D. Plan for Evaluating the Success of Implementing a System
- Select a professional organization (not a government organization). You can search the Course of Study using the key terms “standards” or “organization”.
- Pick two standards or position statements from the selected professional organization. Relate each standard to the use of a HIS.
- Create a specific plan that describes how you can utilize a function of the HIS to meet each standard selected. The plan needs to be specific with an end goal and an evaluation method.
- Conclude with a discussion of how the evaluation of the standards is used to demonstrate the success of the implementation. Review the video on Step 11 of the 21 Steps document
[ANSWER PREVIEW]
Scalability refers to how much the system can except increase in size to meet the growing user needs. The advantage is that the EHR system is highly scalable and can accommodate as many users as possible besides allowing more resources and modifications to be done to increase its user volume. An organization can even connect the system to third party partners to increase, for instance, the amount of information that the system can store. However, the disadvantage here is that as scalability goes up, so does the costs. Scalability involves expensive expansions on the networks including increased need for service and maintenance. For instance, a bigger server may be required for the system to function at a higher scale, which could prove costly and somewhat inhibiting, which means that the organization may channel some of its profits to achieving and maintain scalability of the system. Compatibility of an EHR system defines its ability to seamlessly integrate into the network and communicate and share data with relevant systems. An advantage of the system is that it is flexible and can be tailor-made to be compatible with various systems within the organization or even outside of it in accordance with the organizational…[Buy Full Answer for Just USD 9: 3114 WORDS]
