Nursing and Counselling Theories

The nursing and counseling theories selected include Carl Roger’s person-centered care (PCC) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), respectively. The person-centered care approach advocates for caregivers to partner and collaborate with patients to design and deliver customized care (Santana et al., 2017). The approach's primary importance is that there is a high likelihood of quality care that suits the patient's needs and improves their health through utmost efficiency and effectiveness. I have chosen the nursing theory because, among other things, its efficacy has been proven over the years. In a study testing the efficacy of this theory, Spoorenberg, Uittenbroek, Kremer, Reijneveld, and Wynia (2016) found that older adults felt more secure, exuded a high level of confidence, and exhibited a decreased amount of health problems. Respondents of the study also reported that a significant improvement in the quality of care because the caregivers were able to detect issues early and take remedial actions. Through the partnership, PCC puts patients at the center of care and gives them more control; thus, they are willing to cooperate and fully participate in the caregiving process. The theory advances three core conditions, including congruence, unconditional positive regard, and empathy as part of the caregiving process. Congruence allows a nurse to remain genuine in their relationship with the patient, while unconditional regard mandates a positive attitude towards the patient's issues. Through empathy, the caregiver immerses themselves in the patient's feelings to accurately understand their experiences.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a counseling theoretical framework combining the tenets of both behavioral and cognitive theories. On its own, the behavioral theory of counseling holds that behavior is learned; thus, destructive behaviors can be unlearned. On the other hand, cognitive therapy focuses on how people think and aims to establish how such thought patterns and processes can alter behavior and experiences. I chose the theory since, apart from being holistic, it touches on the two most important areas (cognition and behavior) shaping human experience. The approach is holistic in the sense that it encompasses a family of effective interventions whose positive outcomes have been confirmed empirically (Hayes & Hofmann, 2017). CBT also introduces other valuable skills that can be used in a wide range of unrelated daily life experiences and events by positively focusing on reorienting a person's behavioral and thought path. People who have undergone CBT may cope with life stressors better because of the skills they gain during training. The theory's application is also simple and takes a shorter period as the focus is mainly to replace destructive behaviors with constructive ones.

The goals for practicum experience include:

  1. To gain an in-depth understanding of various nursing and counseling theories and apply them in meeting the healthcare needs of patients, families, and the community.
  2. To master the tenets of quality nursing care to be a high-quality caregiver.
  • To become a nurse leader capable of initiating and advancing requisite changes in my area of practice to benefit patients and fellow nurses.

The following goals will guide my achievement of the above goals:

  1. Acquaint self with professional knowledge, participate in current research, and be part of professional bodies that develop and continuously update my knowledge. Similarly, take relevant certification courses and earn the necessary credentials.
  2. Promote and practice safe evidence-based care that has been proven to support high-quality healthcare and positive outcomes for patients.
  • Become a creative thinker, a collaborator and effective communicator, a quick decision-maker, and be an autonomous and empathetic caregiver who can develop and maintain valuable relationships with patients, their families, and the community.
